In this section, we want to take the opportunity to explain some basic
strategies that are commonly employed by many backgammon players. But,
remember that strategies are situation dependant, and one should therefore
quickly be able to change strategies, depending on how the game unfolds.
The Blockade
When you build a 6 spot thick wall of at least 2 pieces on each spot, you
will have build a blockade and your opponent will not be able to pass it
because no legal moves would be available. The blockade is best done at the
beginning of the game, preferrable in your half of the board, so that you
can then slowly move your pieces into your home board.
The Blitz
The strategy when you try to close your home board as quickly as possible is
called the blitz. This can be done for example, if you roll a high pair and
can quickly take control of several spots on your home board, so that your
opponent will have trouble getting his pieces into play because you have
occupied most spots on your home board. That way, you can usually quickly
close half your home board and keep your opponent on the bar with some of
his pieces.
The Backgame
This strategy should only be employed when you are already loosing. It
basically involves trying to get 2 pieces to several spots of your opponents
home board. By doing that, it's likely that your opponent will not have a
legal move at the end and you might be able to hit one or several of his
checkers, which would then make the game more equal again. But, remember to
use this strategy only when behind.
